You are the gate-keeper

As a leader, you need to prioritize or you run the risk of burning out. Lessons from the trenches.

I recently took over the role of head of programs at StartLife and it's been hectic

Believe me, running programs at a world-class accelerator is not a walk in the park:
Opportunities and requests come from every directions.

.New programs
.New partnerships
.Visiting delegations
.Improving processes
.Coaching entrepreneurs
.Onboarding new startups
.Training younger colleagues
.Developing our network of mentors
.Organising our StartLife 15 year anniversary (Sign up!)

My agenda has never been so full and to be honest, those first few months have been overwhelming

Despite sharing with our managing director,
Despite checking in with myself,
Despite the self-awareness,
Despite the movements,
Despite the meditation,
Despite the grounding,
I was burning out🥵

The real problem?

I thought it was a structural problem
That we didn’t focus enough as an organisation

Then, with the help of my dear and wise colleague, Felice, I realized that the outside world wasn't the problem

The problem was my inside world

The problem was prioritization.

❌ I kept saying yes
❌ I kept starting new things
❌ I kept trying fixing things right now

I was so caught up in my own excitment and goals.
I was so caught up in trying to do good.

I forgot my own self.

But you know what?

The higher you get, the more you will have to do
The higher you get, the more the world will pull for your attention

Write this down:

You are the gatekeeper

Be selective!

✅You are in charge of what gets in your agenda
✅You are in charge of what gets access to your brain

Is this worth your time?
Is this worth your attention?

These are the two most valuables assets you have
Be selective

✅You either prioritize
❌ Or you will burn out

Remember:

You set the pace of your life
Not the outside world

Don’t let go of your own sovereignty

This week I came out alive
Next week, I will be laser-focused on prioritizing

So, what about you?
How do you cope with your own work load?
How do you manage endless requests?

I’d love to hear your tips!
Jean
